Fire extinguisher servicing Ballymena

Fire extinguisher servicing for Ballymena buildings

Northern Ireland has its own fire safety order, its own HMO licensing law and its own building regulations, so compliance work here follows Northern Ireland legislation rather than the rules in Great Britain.

Portable extinguishers are the first line of defence against a small fire, but only if they suit the risk. A water extinguisher on an electrical fire, or a CO2 extinguisher in a commercial kitchen, can make things worse. We select extinguishers to BS 5306-8 based on what could burn in each area.

Every extinguisher needs a basic service each year by a competent person, and an extended service or overhaul at intervals set by its type: usually every five years for water, foam and powder, and a ten-year overhaul for CO2. Each unit is tagged and logged so your fire risk assessor can see its history.

The rules that apply in Ballymena

In Northern Ireland, fire safety in non-domestic premises and the common areas of houses in multiple occupation is governed by the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010, and enforced by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire extinguisher servicing in Ballymena: questions

Do you provide fire extinguisher servicing in Ballymena?

Yes. We carry out fire extinguisher servicing in Ballymena and across County Antrim, including Newtownabbey, Belfast, Lisburn, Bangor (County Down). Use the form to tell us about the building and we will reply within one working day.

Which fire and rescue service covers Ballymena?

Ballymena is covered by Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, which enforces fire safety law for non-domestic premises and the common parts of residential buildings in the area.

How often do fire extinguishers need servicing?

A basic service every 12 months, plus an extended service every five years for water, foam and powder units and an overhaul every ten years for CO2.

Should blocks of flats have extinguishers in the common parts?

Often no. Government guidance for purpose-built flats generally discourages extinguishers in common escape routes, because residents should leave rather than fight a fire. Follow your fire risk assessment.

Which extinguisher do I need for electrical equipment?

CO2 is the usual choice for electrical equipment such as server rooms and offices. Some water mist units are also tested for use on electrical fires.
