Fire safety in Dundee
Scotland has its own fire safety law, its own building standards and its own interlinked alarm standard for every home. Tenement closes, high-rise housing and listed buildings all need an approach built around Scottish requirements.
In Scotland, fire safety in non-domestic premises is governed by the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, and enforced by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Scotland has its own building standards system and its own approach to cladding risk.
Rented homes and HMOs
Since February 2022, every home in Scotland must have interlinked fire alarms: a smoke alarm in the living room, a smoke alarm in every circulation space such as hallways and landings, and a heat alarm in the kitchen, plus a carbon monoxide alarm where there is a fixed combustion appliance or flue.
Taller residential buildings
Scotland does not use the English higher-risk building regime. External wall risk on residential buildings is assessed through the Scottish Government's Single Building Assessment, which looks at the whole building rather than the wall alone.
